5 things you should know about designing small bathrooms

by Ümit Varli

When it comes to small bathrooms, every centimeter counts. Redesigning your own bathroom is a fairly simple task, which is why small bathroom renovations are a great place to start - especially if you're new to decorating.

Just because your bathroom is on the small side doesn't mean you shouldn't concern yourself with the design details. Trust us - it'll make that 7am shower during the week a lot more enjoyable.

As a rule of thumb, cool and earthy tones work best in most bathrooms.
For smaller bathrooms, stick to lighter colors - think baby blue, mint green and the like. If you prefer the color white, an off-white or cream will make the bathroom look less clinical and more inviting.

Do you value a strong, dark shade? That's fine too - just make sure that your bathroom is sufficiently illuminated with wall lights or warm light strips on the underside of the vanity units.

Yes, it may seem obvious, but it's probably a good idea to draw a floor plan before you start. Decide if you want to change the layout of the bathroom and take into account any fixed plumbing.

This is where you can really create the optical illusion of more space than you actually have. Subway tiles are great in larger bathrooms, but dark grout can make small bathrooms appear narrower. Instead, lay rectangular tiles vertically, which will make the ceiling appear higher. Use white or light-colored grout and sealant for a look that's a little more pleasing to the eye.

It's common knowledge that mirrors make rooms appear larger, and this also applies to small bathrooms. Opt for oversized mirrors in a curved or round shape above the washbasin to make a few last-minute adjustments.

Before you start thinking about storage options in your small bathroom, you should first tidy up. Avoid washbasins without built-in storage space and opt for narrow cabinets to store toothbrushes neatly.
